This eighth-century duo is best known for a series of verbal battles (flytings) they carried out over several decades. Verbal Gauntlet argues that these poets performed in order to elevate their own prestige, just as rappers do in modern-day "Dozens" battles. These were performances for performance's sake, a first for a genre traditionally associated with settling tribal disputes. Both the stories and the process of storytelling itself help to define social, cultural and political identity. For Palestinians, the threat of losing their heritage has engendered a sense of urgency among storytellers and Palestinian folklorists. Yet there has been remarkably little academic scholarship dedicated to the tradition.

Farah Aboubakr here analyses a selection of folktales edited, compiled and translated by Ibrahim Muhawi and Sharif Kanaana in Speak, Bird, Speak Again (1989). In addition to the folktales themselves, Muhawi and Kanaana's collection is renowned for providing readers with extensive folkloric, historical and anthropological annotations. Here, for the first time, the folktales and the compilers' work on them, are the subject of scholarly analysis. Synthesising various disciplines including memory studies, gender studies and social movement studies, Aboubakr uses the collection to understand the politics of storytelling and its impact on Palestinian identity. In particular, the book draws attention to the female storytellers who play an essential role in transmitting and preserving collective memory and culture. The book is an important step towards analysing a significant genre of Palestinian literature and will be relevant to scholars of Palestinian politics and popular culture, gender studies and memory studies, and those interested in folklore and oral literature.
Author Biography

Farah Aboubakr is a teaching fellow and researcher at the University of Edinburgh. He uses his poetic talent to educate, inspire and tug the heart strings of a world that is otherwise fed half truths and inaccuracies by the media. From the outset, with a poem called 'The Power of Love', we are led to admire the courage of activists and humanists. We are left with hope at the prospect of "Palestine being free." Between that passionate opening and closing, the book takes us on an emotional journey that deals with some very difficult topics... topics such as internment, death and devastation. However, the poems also expose the organisations that are responsible for the strife; they educate us and remember the victims of Israel's occupation. Fred McNeill and this book of Palestine poems, ultimately serves as the voices of the voiceless. Eric Peet (Author)

During the last hundred years scholarship has revealed the existence of two other eastern literatures which are not only as old as that of the Hebrews but very much older, namely those of Egypt and Babylonia. . . . Although much of Babylonian literature is know to us mainly from the Assyrian versions found in Assurbanipal's library, recent discoveries have shown that many of its best epic and lyric productions go back at least two thousand years further, and have their roots in the Sumerian civilization. In Egypt, too, religious literature is found in a highly developed state as early as the Pyramid Texts, which, in the form in which we have them, are as old as 2500 B.C., and possibly go back in part to much earlier originals. These discoveries make it no longer possible to regard the literature of the Hebrews as an isolated phenomenon in the ancient East, and they furnish a host of new criteria which must be applied to any attempt to explain and to appraise the Old Testament. --from the Preface

Author Biography

T. Khaled Furani takes his reader down ancient roads and across military checkpoints to join the poets' worlds and engage with the rhythms of their lifelong journeys in Islamic and Arabic history, language, and verse. There are hurdles to jump, obstacles to overcome, and convincing to do, as the magnetism between Mohammad and Sarah draws them unavoidably together. The chasms of culture, language, and religion seem insurmountable; Mohammad's mother has picked out the perfect Palestinian wife for him; Sarah's parents are not too keen on the possibility of a Moslem son-in-law named Mohammad and would rather she marry the boy next door.It is a story of prejudice and compromise, of ignorance and understanding, of severing ties and unity. Neither Mohammad nor Sarah questions their love for each other, but they do wonder if love is enough.

Number of Pages: 480

Dimensions: 1.07 x 9.02 x 5.98 IN

Publication Date: July 11, 2016

Report copyright infringement

by Donn Hutchison (Author)

It is the momentous year of 1917; the end of four hundred years of Ottoman Rule, the beginning of the British Mandate, and marks the birth of Salma's seventeenth child - Hasna. Not only is Hasna a girl born into a society that prizes boys, she is cursed with red hair, blue eyes and freckles. They set her apart, leave her excluded, and are viewed with suspicion in a society where superstitions are a part of daily life. Her father refers to her only as the girl; even her mother acknowledges that Hasna is not very pretty. Still, Hasna is smart, capable and hardworking - tenacious of life, though married off at thirteen and a half to a boy she has never seen, she finds love and contentment in marriage, motherhood and family. Peasants never have it easy, and this tumultuous time in Palestine's history certainly makes life harder. When Omar, the night of the wedding, lifts the veils that cover his bride's face with a sword, she is terrified; but he is gentle, kind, and considerate. Thus begins the love story of Omar and Nijmeh. It will carry them through the terrifying days of the nakbe; the tragedy of a people displaced from all they know, adjustment to exile, to life in a refugee camp, and ultimately to military occupation. Sewn into the tapestry of their life will be the cat-and-mouse game of occupier and occupied and imprisonment; tragic death and heartache; there is compromise of principles; there is immovable faith, and there is also inexplicable joy. A university student invents an imaginary girlfriend to fit in with his callous, womanizing roommates. A lawyer takes on the impossible mission of becoming a body smuggler. A lonely widower travels to Russia in search of a movie starlet he met in his youth in historical Jaffa. A refugee who escaped violent circumstances rebels against the kindness of his sponsor. The book outlines the historical development of Palestinian dramatic activities from their hesitant rise before 1948 and the first theatrical attempts to the heavy blow which these attempts suffered as a result of the establishment of the State of Israel, to the regeneration of professional theatre out of the ashes of the 1967 defeat, through to the activities of the 1970s and the role they played in Palestinian nation-building. It provides a glimpse into the nature of the current Palestinian theatrical movement, the artistic framework within which it developed, its main themes and poetic traits as well as its major sources of influence. The study is essentially an historical one, but the methodology is combined with literary and dramatic perspectives and insights. Emphasis is placed on the historical development of practical theatrical activities and the rise of dramatic literature, with special attention given to the institutions in which those activities took place. An attempt has been made to present in some detail several of the most important dramatic works in the various historical phases. In addition to an analysis of the written texts, the discussion of the plays also refers to the relevant details of their practical staging. The study includes in-depth investigation of the activities of two major professional Palestinian troupes: the al-Balalin and al-Hakawati, due to the vital effect these troupes have had on the professionaliztion of Palestinian theatre. The primary audience of the book are scholars and students of Arabic culture and literature, as well as scholars and students of theatre and Palestinian nationalism. The book will also be of interest to intellectuals interested in Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Number of Pages: 256

Dimensions: 0.9 x 9.6 x 6.9 IN

Publication Date: October 24, 2005
